Shepherd's Pie


When I searched for a savoury pie recipe I happened to view some of the wonderful dishes that were called the Shepherd's Pie. All those pics made me drool over it, so decided to try it out and satisfy myself. ... and yes of course my family too. Made this for dinner and surprisingly my li'l boy - the fussy eater - loved it so much that he gladly asked for a second helping. Hubby loved it too and asked me to keep making it whenever I can. It doesn't take much time, but it did for me coz my li'l gal kept me busy in between the cooking and the assembling part. And when the assembling part was over the current went and so had to wait till it came, for the baking part.

There's 3 layers in this pie - the bottom layer being a simple sausage masala, the 2nd layer being creamy pasta and the top layer being mashed buttery potatoes - and finally garnished with some mozzarella cheese. Sounds interesting???? Check out the recipe. ...


Ingredients

TOP LAYER

Potatoes - 3 or 4 nos - boiled and mashed
Butter - 2 tbsp
Milk - 1/2 cup - 3/4 cup
Salt - as required
Pepper powder - 1/4 tsp

MIDDLE LAYER

Pasta - 2 cups - cooked
Cream - 2 tbsp
Milk - 1 cup
Salt - to taste
Pepper - 1/2 tsp

BOTTOM LAYER

Sausage - 3 or 4 nos - cut in cubes
Onion - 1 big - chopped
Carrot - 1 - chopped
Cabbage - chopped - 1/2 cup
Capsicum - chopped - 1/2 cup
Tomato - 2 - chopped
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
Kashmir chilli powder - 1/2 tsp
Garam masala powder - 1/2 tsp
Jeera powder - 1/4 tsp
Salt - to taste
Coriander leaves - for garnish


Method

Top layer - Mix all the ingredients well till it becomes smooth and creamy in texture. Keep aside. 

Middle layer - Cook pasta as per packet instructions. Heat cream and milk in very low flame for a minute and add salt and pepper. Mix well with pasta and switch off flame.

OR

Make a white sauce - Melt 2 tbsp butter in a saucepan.Stir in 3 tbsp flour and cook for 1-2 minutes.Take the pan off the heat and gradually stir in 1 cup milk to get a smooth sauce. Return to the heat and, stirring all the time, bring to the boil. Simmer gently for 8-10 minutes and season with salt and 1/2 tsp pepper. Mix this sauce with pasta and keep aside.

Bottom layer - Heat oil in a pan, add onions and sausages and saute till the sausages get cooked. Add the carrot, tomato and capsicum and saute for a minute or two. Add the masala powders and mix well. Switch off flame and garnish with coriander leaves. 

ASSEMBLING

Take a baking dish and spread the masala evenly. Add the creamy pasta on top of this masala and spread evenly. Then add the mashed potatoes and spread evenly. Finally add some shredded mozzarella cheese on top and bake in an oven at 180 C for 20 minutes. 

Note :  You can add any veggies of your choice for the masala or make it with plain sausages or boneless chicken. Vegetarians can use veggies of your choice like paneer, spinach, carrot, corn, etc. Adjust spices as required. 

The recipe might seem long with lots of things to do (this is the first recipe I've typed so long...phew), but in fact it's not that hard and its all worth the effort. Make the masala first, then the mashed potatoes and finally the pasta, so that it doesn't dry off by the time you assemble. 

P.S  :  Didn't get a decent snap (lack of time) of the sliced part, so please excuse me for not being able to show the layers.
